Twitter Tip: Finding People to Follow

For the last few weeks I've be keeping a list of twitter tools that are helpful for finding people to follow. And today I've seen several references to finding people on twitter from Mari Smith and Rich Brooks.

Often when starting on twitter, it can seem confusing to try and figure who you should be or would like to be following. Why do you want to follow people? It's the best way to meet cool, smart, influential people AND sometimes they follow you back! :-)

My first suggestion is to follow influential people in your industry, your clients and customers, vendors, competitors, colleagues and friends. You can use the search feature on your twitter profile (upper right, click on Find People).

Then there are the tools that help you hone in on more people to add to your list...

Online Visibility Tip: Usernamecheck.com Protects You

Protect your online identity and reputation by locking in your preferred username on as many social networking sites as possible. Visit Usernamecheck.com to check if your preferred username is available, then set up accounts where you don't yet have visibility. Posterous Can Help Extend Your Online Visibility

A few days ago I shared the video below with some clients. You may benefit from it as well.

At BlogWorld and New Media Expo, I attended a presentation by Steve Rubel, a blogger I've been following since 2005. He recently declared blogging to be on it's way out and is now "lifestreaming"  exclusively on Posterous. I stick to my opinion that Posterous is a blog, simple, but a blog nonetheless.

Steve Rubel talked about how essential it is to be "ubiquitous" - you have to be everywhere you think your ideal client/customer/patient/reader etc. hangs out. Posterous gives you the ability to aggregate your content on one site and syndicate that content to multiple other "embassies." It's about being discoverable and visible. Here's my take on Posterous (click here if you can't see the video in your blog reader):

I like using Posterous for photos which get distributed to Flickr and Facebook simultaneously. Just one action for me to take to get my images in three different locations. My Posterous use is sporadic yet it does help extend my visibility online so I need to be more strategic about what I post there. Here's my Posterous site.

Twitter Tips for Business continued...
