More and more we are hearing about backlinks and how important they are to getting a good pagerank on Google. And this is a question we get time and again, "how do I get more people to link to my blog?"
One thing you need to keep in mind is that it's better to have a highly ranked website link to you. So I was wondering if that works on Amazon.com? Maybe I'm missing something here and web/SEO gurus who know way more about this can add to my limited knowledge, but if you were to set up a profile on Amazon.com that includes a link to your blog, then post book reviews, create Listmania lists and guides, wouldn't that help your pagerank?
At the very least it can help create awareness for you and your business. If your review is substantial and provocative, a reader might click on the link for your name. That takes them to your profile and if that's compelling, they may click on the link to your blog. Over the weekend I posted a review of Tom Antion's book The Ultimate Guide to Electronic Marketing for Small Business. I'm going to make a point to post book reviews from here on out and see if it makes any difference.
Do you use this as a way to drive traffic to your blog? If so, what's your experience?

Yikes, I'm missing out! I even got an email from Amazon asking me to write reviews for the last 3 books I bought from them. Of course, I put it on my list of things to do whenever... What day of the week is "whenever?" I better go do that now...

I've always done profile raising type things including comments and reviews on Amazon but it's only lately that it occurred to me that putting a link to my blog there might be a good move.
In fact the lightbulb moment only came when I commented on a blog entry from Gloria Page about an art retreat we just returned from last week. http://tinyurl.com/pvcuq
The negative about that is that comments on individual posts are at least three mouse clicks away from the main page that one lands on for her Amazon authors' blog. So a link to my blog is now in my Amazon profile as well. Every little bit helps.

From what I understand about Page Rank, I don't think that the link from the Amazon profile page will help much as that page has no page rank and the url looks like it might not be very Googlebot friendly (allthough I could well be wrong).
Having said that though, I reckon you would get some highly targeted visitors coming to your website.
Anyway, I'm converted - I just have to set up my profile and start writing some reviews. Should not be too difficult as I review quite a few books on my blogs.
Cheers
Dominic.

It's about six months later, and I'm wondering if you've noticed any changes to your blog as a result of the Amazon book reviews?
There's also the factor that Google recently updated again, so that might influence your results, but still this seems to be a really great idea. Wondering how it's working for you?!

Bobbie, good question. If I were actually on top of it, I would be writing more book reviews, but I've been lax (read: busy) so I cannot report any any positive outcomes. Anyone else see traffic coming from their profile page on Amazon.com?

I think amazon uses no follow on thier outbound links. Which would not help at all in Google. Although Yahoo does seem to ignore no follow.

I think it's quite difficult to get them...

I intend to give it a shot. Even if it is a no-follow link, some search engines still give these links credit.
I'll use it on my control test site.

The most important SEO is about keyword anchored backlinks. The rest are just bonus. Get enough of these links and you can rank for almost anything.

Very smart post, there's one thing that we can't put links directly in the reviews or comments, only one url can be used, so you use homepage all the time or will make a change sometimes.
